Main research themes and their characteristics

「Real Communication Real Connection」

Teaching English is something I’ve been working towards doing since I was 14. The first time I considered teaching as a career was during high school. I volunteered as a support person for students who had difficulty reading test questions. The ability to explain something in such a way that is simple and understandable to students of different cultures has always been a passion.

The decision to teach in Japan was inspired by both my own personal travels and study abroad in Japan. Japan is a beautiful country with amazingly rich history and a culture entirely different from my own. It has been a fascinating experience and I’m still enjoying the journey. My fascination with the evolution of English as a global language and the significant changes to it that have occurred throughout history, is a research theme I am examining and exploring for my post-graduate studies.

It is an honor and a privilege to be the only female foreign national in the English department. Adapting my own teaching method and style to the class and specific to students needs has been immensely rewarding and a truly unique learning experience.

The English department is also a great environment for collaborative research. Professor Lee’s research on the effects of texting on the English language is something I have previously explored during my own studies and this has inspired me to continue this line of inquiry in the future.

I am expanding on the project-based learning in the classroom, in addition to the students performing short presentations in English. This will include both collaborative and individual projects by the students.

Fukui University of Technology’s study abroad program with Southern Cross University is a wonderful opportunity for Japanese students to immerse themselves in the Australian culture and to visit my hometown, Lismore. I have been impressed by returning student’s presentations which displays their improved English language acquired during that cultural exchange.

I look forward to helping and guiding young students in their language journey and sincerely hope that they become competent global thinkers.
